Ann and I went to Austin to visit some friends, and in the process got our friend
Gentiana, who came up from Houston, hooked on climbing. She knew a lot about
the sport, coming from a climbing family, and being a mountain / outdoors person
to begin with, but had not really done a lot of it before. After our outing, she
promptly got some gear and started going to the gym after we got back. Six months
later she led her first 5.10. This is really good, seeing that we need a rope
gun the next time we all go sport climbing ...
I did the Dome Driver route, which
scores high on the cool route name scale, and which has pretty good low angle
face climbing on it as well. Runout start and a well-protected crux on the first
pitch, followed by easy and run-out climbing on the second pitch.
Sweat is another great route, a crack which
progressively narrows towards the top, so you go from off-width to fingerlocks.
The only shortcoming of this climb is that it is too short.
